Deputies searching for credit card criminal

A bank customer foiled a plan by a crook to steal peoples account information when police say he found a device called a skimmer attached to an ATM.

It happened Wednesday night at the Wachovia Bank branch in North Naples at the corner of US 41 and Immokalee Road.

The ATM security camera shows a man in a floppy hat attaching the skimmer at 6:10 p.m. At around 9:30 p.m. a customer noticed that something looked strange on the ATM. He pulled off the skimmer, which was only attached with tape.

A skimmer is a device that fits over the card reading slot on ATMs and gas pumps. When you slide in your card it captures your account and pin numbers. The criminals then have access to your money.

Detectives say four or five customers used the machine before the skimmer was removed, but their information is safe because it never got in to the hands of crooks.

Authorities say skimming is more common than you might think. In fact they investigate 400 to 500 skimming complaint a year in Collier County alone.

Tonight on our 6:00 news we will have advice on how to protect yourself from this growing crime.
